5 Reasons to write your own vows

The debate of traditional wedding vows VS non traditional vows is often heated, long, and highly opinionated. If this is the case with you, here are a few tips to help you decide.

 1 – Heartfelt meaning.
Scripture is great, and definitely has its place in many people’s hearts, but think about the first time you told your future spouse you loved them. Did you make reference to any holy books, or did you speak from the heart?

2 – Tears make a wedding better.
Nothing says successful wedding like a tearful audience. And in this case, more is definitely better. Sure, everyone might choke up a bit at the bride’s arrival, and the final kiss – but why not make ‘em cry the whole way through? Heartfelt words exchanged between the couple don’t just make it a more personal exchange for the couple, but for the captive audience as well.

3 – Humor.
Often times a couple can invite a little humor into their sacred moment. While this is certainly not the time to pull out the “A material”, a chuckle in between the happy sobs adds a much needed moment of levity.

4 – Capturing the moment in time.
When you look back at your wedding videos, do you want scripture you’ve heard a thousand times, or do you want to be reminded of how you felt, and the promises you made to each other? To look back at that moment in time can rekindle the embers of feeling in a relationship much more powerfully than referencing someone else’s promises or tribulations.

5 – Compromise.
Ultimately, if scripture is important to you or your partner, there’s no rule that says you can’t add in a few of your own vows or opinions as well. Marriage is a sacred union, and ultimately what is important to both partners should be addressed.

5 Reasons to use traditional vows

1 – Emphasis.
Some people feel that promises are made to be broken, but promises to The Lord are sealed upon their very souls. If you want commitment, it doesn’t get any more serious than swearing to God Almighty.

2 – Seriousness.
All too often, people treat the sanctity of marriage too lightly. This is not a night at a comedy club, but a solemn oath that should be treated as such.

3 – Help.
Many believe that the use of the traditional vows will enlist holy aid in their marriages. With the divorce rate as it is, who couldn’t use a little help?

4 – Parents.
Let’s face it. Sometimes a wedding is more for the parents than for the stars of the show. If scripture will make your parents happy, who are you to deny the ones who gave you life in the first place?

5 – Ease.
It’s a heck of a lot easier to stumble over the vows you bring in on a crumpled piece of paper, than it is to simply repeat back what the priest is telling you. If you’ve got stage fright, this is the way to go!
